Raised Panels

During early design meetings, our scenic designer wanted Spanish tiling throughout the walls of the set. She also specifically wanted every other tile to have a raised dimension to it. Because of the proximity of the audience to the set, we used 1/2” MDF ripped into 13” x 13” squares to flow with the design style. Early in the design, the idea was for the tiles to flip over to reveal a different location in the show. Due to a lack of available personnel during the time of the scene shifts it was decided that this wasn’t a feasible option so this was cut during rehearsals, but the tiles were still built and attached in a way that this was possible. To achieve this we attached muslin to both sides of the tiles to create a fabric hinge for the tile to flip to the other side.
