Space Transformation

For this production we had a space donated to us for the summer. The space was an old clothing store located inside one of our local malls in Birmingham. This presented some obvious challenges, some of which included the acoustics in the room, lack of lighting positions, lack of power in the room, and massive white walls as well as a floor that we could not change.

One of the solutions we made was by laying down a Masonite floor on top of the floor to allow us to add a paint treatment as well as give the actors a better surface to perform the complicated fight choreography.

Another way we solved the space complications was by utilizing the walls and columns that were directly in the playing space as part of the design. The walls that were on the perimeter of the room were covered in old drops that were painted black to make the space more theatrical.

In order to solve the poor acoustics issue in the room, we hung fabric throughout the ceiling to prevent the sound from going into the ceiling and force it into the house as part of the design.

To address the lack of lighting positions and power in the room, we worked with the mall to have them add additional breakers and circuits to the room, allowing us to hook up our dimmer packs. From there we were able to hang instruments and rig points from the roofing truss to drop hang pipe to hang LED Bars to add color.
