stage floor and 5 trap doors

Early on in the design process, our director wanted actors and props to come from trap doors in the stage. This was a challenge because our regular stage floor does not have any trap doors in it. Thankfully our apron is on a hydraulic lift. Since our stage floor can lower, we were able to lower it to 9’ below the stage to build a “trap room” and create our own stage floor. Our designer wanted the floor to be in the shape of the moon and have a large arc cut in it. Since we were building a new stage floor, this wasn’t a problem to cut a large arc in the floor. It was decided early on in rehearsals that our director needed 5 different trap doors in order to carry out the vision he had for the show. There were 2 “sewer drain” style trap doors and 3 rectangular traps varying in size.
